Shimla, June 24
The political atmosphere in Himachal Pradesh remains turbulent, with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stirring controversy by accusing BJP leaders of preempting a High Court verdict. In a recent media interaction at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, Sukhu expressed astonishment at former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and BJP President Rajiv Bindal’s prediction regarding an impending court ruling against six Congress MLAs and Chief Parliamentary Secretaries (CPS).
Sukhu’s remarks followed a public meeting where Thakur and Bindal asserted that the ongoing petition against the CPS could destabilize the Congress government. The Chief Minister questioned how the BJP leaders could predict the High Court’s decision when the judgment is still reserved, suggesting their comments might constitute contempt of court.
The controversy began during the Rajya Sabha elections, where the Congress government narrowly avoided a political crisis as six Congress MLAs defected to the BJP, leading to cross-voting. Although the Speaker disqualified the rebel MLAs, two won the subsequent by-elections on June 1. Currently, three assembly seats are vacant following the resignation of three Independent MLAs who joined the BJP, with polling scheduled for July 10.
Sukhu also highlighted that nine BJP MLAs are facing disqualification notices from the Speaker, adding another layer to the political landscape. He emphasized that the BJP’s attempts to predict court outcomes and create political instability are not resonating well with the electorate. Sukhu confidently predicted a Congress victory in the upcoming by-elections, accusing the BJP of undermining democratic processes.
The political rivalry between Congress and the BJP has intensified since the Rajya Sabha elections, with both parties exchanging barbs and accusations. Sukhu’s decision to involve his spouse in politics has further fueled internal party conflicts and external opposition, leading to a climate of continuous political drama.
The state remains on edge, as the political maneuvers extend beyond elections and into courts, police stations, and public demonstrations, keeping Himachal Pradesh in the media spotlight.
