Shimla, Nov 21,
A tragic incident unfolded in Khadi village of the Shillai assembly constituency in Sirmaur district late Thursday night, when a massive fire engulfed two cowsheds and killed 60 livestock, inflicting severe loss and shock on the local community.
The fire broke out around 2 a.m. in two adjoining cowsheds belonging to Layak Ram, son of Sami, situated a short distance from his residence. Both structures—constructed with wood and tin sheets—were swiftly consumed by the flames, leaving no time for rescue. By the time help arrived, the damage was already catastrophic.
According to the administration’s inspection report, 35 goats, 20 rams, and 5 lambs were burned alive inside the cowshed. Two Jersey cows also sustained severe burn injuries and remain in critical condition. The estimated value of the livestock lost is approximately ₹8 lakh, while the cowshed itself is valued at ₹1 lakh, bringing the total loss to around ₹9 lakh.
Shillai SDM Jaswal confirmed the incident and said that the cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation. “The administration has provided immediate relief of Rs 10,000 to the affected family. A case is being filed and forwarded to the government to ensure further relief as per norms,” he stated.
The tragic loss of livestock has left the family devastated, and the incident has underscored the vulnerability of rural households whose livelihoods depend heavily on cattle and small ruminants. Authorities are continuing their probe into the cause of the fire.
