Shimla, July 17
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a significant return of monsoon conditions in Himachal Pradesh, with continuous rainfall predicted over the next five days. This follows a period of retreating monsoon activity over the past ten days.
Over the past day, the state has experienced varying degrees of rainfall, from light to moderate across several regions, with Bilaspur experiencing particularly heavy downpours. Temperature fluctuations have remained stable, with Kukumseri recording a low of 12.1°C and Bhuntar reaching a high of 37.4°C.
The upcoming week will likely see persistent rainfall, predominantly in the low and middle hills, where heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in certain areas. In the higher hills, rainfall will be less frequent but will still be a constant presence.
Districts including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur are specifically warned to brace for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rain. These weather conditions may result in localized flooding, waterlogging, and minor damage to infrastructure such as roads. Traffic disruptions and reduced visibility are also anticipated, potentially affecting daily activities and travel plans.
Farmers are advised to secure their horticultural crops with mechanical support and adhere to local advisories to minimize potential damage. Residents should avoid waterlogged areas and prepare for possible interruptions to essential services such as water, electricity, and communications.
The synoptic situation reveals a monsoon trough stretching from Jaisalmer to the central Bay of Bengal, which is influencing the rainfall pattern in the region. Additionally, a Western Disturbance is contributing to the enhanced rainfall activity across Himachal Pradesh.
The IMD noted that the first 20 days of the monsoon season showed a rainfall deficiency of 45 to 50 percent.
