Shimla, July 14
Himachal Pradesh Congress on Tuesday staged protests across the state against the alleged theft and misappropriation of donations meant for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, accusing the BJP of shielding those responsible and demanding accountability in the matter.
Acting on a call given by the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee, party leaders and workers held demonstrations at district headquarters. In Shimla, the protest was organised jointly by the Shimla Urban and Rural District Congress Committees.
Congress leaders and workers marched from the party’s state headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, to the Ram Temple, singing Ram Bhajans and raising slogans against those allegedly involved in tampering with devotees’ offerings.
Addressing the gathering, AICC spokesperson and Theog MLA Kuldeep Singh Rathore alleged that the BJP was protecting the main accused in the case. He claimed that facts were being concealed under the guise of an investigation and asserted that the Congress would not remain silent over what he described as a serious betrayal of people’s faith.
Rathore said the BJP had mobilised donations from devotees across India and abroad during the construction of the Ram Temple, but was now maintaining silence over the alleged theft of temple donations.
He alleged that the misappropriation had taken place under the BJP’s patronage and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the issue.
Shimla Rural District Congress Committee president Harikrishna Himral said Tuesday’s protest at the district headquarters marked the beginning of a wider campaign.
He announced that similar programmes would now be organised in every block and village of the state to expose what he termed the BJP’s politics in the name of Lord Ram.
The protest was attended by Kuldeep Singh Rathore, Harikrishna Himral, Congress vice-president Amit Nanda, former MLA Sohan Lal, Kehar Singh Khachi, Chandra Shekhar, Deepak Rathore, Baldev Thakur, Vineet Gautam, Sonia Chauhan and several other senior party leaders, office-bearers, elected representatives and a large number of Congress workers.
