Heavy rains lashes HP; landslide disrupts traffic near Shimla

The southwest monsoon remained active over Himachal Pradesh on Monday, with moderate rainfall reported at many places across the state and a landslide disrupting traffic near the Chamyana four-lane road in Shimla.
The landslide brought debris onto the road, affecting vehicular movement. After receiving information, police alerted the Public Works Department (PWD), following which machinery was rushed to the spot to clear the debris. The clearance operation was underway and police personnel were regulating traffic. The road is expected to be reopened after the debris is completely removed. Commuters have been advised to drive cautiously and follow instructions issued by the police.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rain was recorded at many places during the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Monday. Dharamsala received the highest rainfall of 6 cm, followed by Arki with 5 cm, while Theog, Paonta, Shimla and Jogindernagar recorded 4 cm each.
The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall during the coming days, with heavy to very heavy rain likely at isolated places on August 10 and 11 and heavy rain at isolated places on August 12 and 13. Heavy rain is again expected at isolated places from August 14 to 16.
Kangra and Sirmaur are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain on Monday, while heavy rain has been forecast in Una, Bilaspur, Mandi and Shimla. On August 11, Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain, with heavy rain also expected in several other districts.
The weather department has warned of possible landslides, mudslides, flash floods, waterlogging and traffic congestion in vulnerable areas. It has advised people to avoid landslide- and flash-flood-prone areas, maintain a safe distance from rivers and streams and follow traffic advisories.
