Shimla, Mar 27
Bolstering strategic connectivity in Ladakh, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has completed the construction of the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road. Spanning 298 kilometers, this road will serve as the third vital axis linking Ladakh to the mainland, complementing the existing Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh routes.
In a social media message the organisation made this announcement. The Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road offers a shorter and more efficient route between Manali and Leh, traversing through Darcha and Nimmu on the Kargil-Leh Highway.

Its strategic importance lies in its ability to provide all-weather connectivity to Ladakh, with only one pass, Shinkun La (16,558 feet) enroute. This pass will also soon feature a tunnel, currently in the works by the BRO.
The completion of this road enhances defence preparedness and facilitates economic development in the Zanskar valley, contributing to the region’s overall growth.
Experts believe that the enhanced connectivity provided by the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road significantly bolsters defence preparedness in Ladakh, ensuring smoother logistics and troop movement.
In days to come the construction of the tunnel at Shinkun La will ensure that the road remains operational throughout the year, mitigating the impact of adverse weather conditions and seasonal closures.
