Shimla, July 12
In a operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent and an Inspector from the Central Goods & Services Tax (CGST) office in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, on charges of bribery. The arrests were made following a complaint and subsequent investigation that unveiled the demand and acceptance of a bribe of Rs. 8,000, informed a CBI media note.
It stated that a case was registered by the CBI under Section 61(2) of the Bhartiya Nayaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, read with Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in July 2018). The complaint alleged that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs. 12,000 from the complainant through his friend for the processing and approval of a CGST registration number for the complainant’s firm. The accused threatened to reject the registration if the bribe was not paid.
During a visit to the CGST office in Solan, the accused agreed to reduce the bribe amount to Rs. 8,000. The CBI laid a trap, catching the Inspector red-handed while accepting the bribe in collaboration with the Superintendent. Searches were conducted at the official and residential premises of the accused in Solan (HP), Mohali (Punjab), and Una District (HP), leading to the recovery of incriminating documents and articles.
The arrested officials were presented before the Competent Court in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The investigation is ongoing, concluded the media note.
