Shimla, Sept 16,
A CBI court in Shimla on Monday rejected the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) request to extend the police remand of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pankaj Kumar and instead sent him to 10 days’ judicial custody till September 26.
Kumar, arrested on September 14 from his native village in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district, has been booked in the case linked to the mysterious death of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Chief Engineer Vimal Negi. He was lodged in Kaithu Jail after being produced in court.

The court also turned down his bail application, citing the seriousness of the allegations.
During arguments, CBI counsel sought further custodial interrogation, saying Kumar needed to be confronted with witnesses and electronic evidence allegedly tampered with. Defence counsel Piyush Verma opposed the plea, pointing out that the agency had earlier told the Himachal Pradesh High Court through an affidavit that his custodial interrogation was not required. He also submitted that the offences under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita were cognizable but bailable, and that no new evidence had been presented.
After hearing both sides, the court ruled that there were insufficient grounds to extend CBI custody.
