Shimla, Sept 19,
In a startling revelation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has unearthed strong evidence of tampering with a crucial pen drive linked to the mysterious death of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Chief Engineer, Vimal Negi. The probe has confirmed that data on the pen drive was deleted inside Shimla’s Sadar police station.
As per the investigation report placed before the court, CCTV footage from March 21 shows ASI Pankaj Sharma accessing the pen drive on a police station computer. Forensic analysis later found the device had been formatted. The CBI has indicated that further inquiry is in progress to establish the extent of involvement of individuals in handling the device.
The agency has also pointed to inconsistencies in the recovery of belongings from Negi’s body, discovered in the Sutlej River on March 18. While some articles, including cash and a driving license, were handed over to Talai police station, the pen drive was not immediately accounted for, raising questions under examination.
Officials said more personnel from Sadar station may be questioned. The report also noted differences in earlier accounts filed by senior police officers, which prompted the High Court to transfer the matter to the CBI.
The agency has emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and under judicial consideration.
