Shimla, Nov 1,
The annual horse exhibition in Rampur, Shimla district, is a captivating prelude to the renowned International Lavi Fair. This three-day event, held from November 4th to 6th at the Patbungla Ground, celebrates the majestic Chamurthi horse, a breed deeply intertwined with the region’s history and culture.
Often hailed as the “ship of the mountains,” the Chamurthi horse is renowned for its remarkable ability to navigate treacherous terrains, including steep slopes, snow-laden paths, and rugged landscapes. This ancient breed, also known as the Spiti horse, has been an indispensable companion to the mountainous communities of India and Tibet for centuries.
To preserve this invaluable heritage, the Animal Husbandry Department has undertaken a scientific breeding initiative at the Lari Farm in Kinnaur district. This project aims to safeguard the Chamurthi lineage and ensure their continued role in transporting essential supplies to remote areas.
The horse exhibition in Rampur offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of these magnificent creatures. Visitors can witness their strength and endurance in various competitions, including races, balloon-bursting contests, and load-bearing trials. Before the young Chamurthi horses are fitted with horseshoes, a unique ritual known as “Tar-Dzung” is performed, symbolizing respect for the animal and a prayer for its well-being.
The event also features educational seminars for breeders, fostering knowledge and promoting best practices in horse care. Dr. Anil Sharma, a senior official in the Animal Husbandry Department, emphasized the enduring significance of the Chamurthi horse in Himachal Pradesh’s remote regions. Despite the advancements of modern technology, these majestic creatures continue to play a vital role in the lives of mountain communities.
