Shimla, Jul 8
The Congress-led government in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday appeared to intensify its political engagement on religious matters by organising a march and special prayers at the Ram Temple in Shimla. The initiative has attracted considerable attention amid the ongoing political discourse surrounding the alleged theft at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, accompanied by the entire Council of Ministers, led a procession from the State Secretariat to the Ram Temple in Lower Bazaar. The march, which included participation from party workers and supporters, concluded with special prayers conducted in the presence of temple trustees and local devotees. The event represented a notable and symbolic public display of collective worship by a Congress-led administration, traditionally associated with a secular political framework.
Addressing the gathering following the prayers, the Chief Minister criticised BJP state president Rajiv Bindal for his remarks targeting the Congress over its stance on the Ayodhya Ram Temple theft issue. Sukhu asserted that no political party or individual has the authority to define religious identity, emphasising that faith remains a personal matter. He further alleged that the BJP and the RSS were attempting to appropriate religious issues for political purposes, accusing them of utilising places of worship and public contributions as instruments of political mobilisation. Sukhu maintained that the Congress shares concerns regarding the reported incident at the Ayodhya temple and is justified in seeking transparency and accountability.
According to media reports, the alleged theft at the Ayodhya temple has prompted a broader discussion on the management of temple funds and security arrangements, with opposition parties raising questions about oversight mechanisms. BJP leaders, however, have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, accusing the Congress of attempting to generate controversy around a sensitive religious issue in the lead-up to elections.
The developments in Himachal Pradesh carry significant political implications. Analysts suggest that the Congress’s visible engagement with religious symbolism reflects a strategic recalibration aimed at countering the BJP’s longstanding influence over the Hindutva narrative. By participating in public religious activities, the party appears to be positioning itself as respectful of Hindu traditions while seeking to address perceptions of disconnect from majority sentiments.
Political observers also note that such initiatives are increasingly part of a broader trend in which political parties across the spectrum attempt to balance secular principles with visible expressions of religious identity. The Shimla temple visit is therefore being interpreted not only as a response to the Ayodhya controversy but also as part of a wider effort by the Congress to reshape its public image within a competitive political landscape.
Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the reported theft at the Ayodhya Ram Temple continues to intensify political exchanges between the BJP and the Congress. While the BJP has accused the Congress of politicising a sensitive issue, the ruling party in Himachal Pradesh maintains that raising concerns about alleged irregularities at a place of worship constitutes a legitimate call for accountability and transparency rather than partisan politics.
