Congress Unveils First Set of Candidates for Municipal Polls in Shimla
Shimla, April 12
The ruling Congress party in the state of Himachal Pradesh has announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Shimla Municipal Corporation polls and Palampur Municipal Corporation by-election. The party has released the names of seven candidates for Shimla Municipal Corporation and one candidate for Palampur Municipal Corporation.
The candidates announced for Shimla Municipal Corporation are Uma Kaushal from Tutikandi ward, Umang Banga from Lower Bazar, Kumari Shinam Kataria from Benmore, Narendra Thakur from Bhattakufar, Surendra Chauhan from Chhota Shimla, Deepak Rohal from Patyog, and Kumari Kusum Latha from New Shimla. The candidate announced for the Palampur Municipal Corporation by-election is Radha Sood from Palampur Uparla.
The party made the announcement in the presence of State Congress President MP Pratibha Singh and Industries Minister Harshvardhan Chauhan at the State Congress Headquarters Rajiv Bhawan. The party spokesperson stated that the names were finalized by the party steering committee from those wards where only one candidate applied for the ticket.
The party is expected to announce the names of candidates for the remaining 27 wards soon. The steering committee is expected to meet today, and the Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and the party president are likely to attend the meeting.
The Shimla Municipal Corporation polls are crucial for the Congress party as it looks to return to power in the municipal body. The party has been out of power in the Shimla Municipal Corporation for the past five years and is hoping to continue its winning streak, like Vidhan Sabha polls.
The Palampur Municipal Corporation by-election, on the other hand, has been necessitated due to the death of the sitting councilor.
The Congress party is hoping to win both the Shimla and Palampur Municipal Corporations to strengthen its position in the state ahead of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for later in 2024. The party is expected to field strong candidates in all the wards and is leaving no stone unturned to ensure victory in the upcoming polls.
