Shimla, Feb 7,
After improvement in weather conditions and restoration of the Darcha–Shinkula road, road connectivity between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh via Zanskar and Kargil has been re-established. The strategic route had remained closed for nearly two weeks due to heavy snowfall, causing a complete disruption of vehicular traffic and affecting the movement of essential supplies and passengers.
Although the road has now been opened, large quantities of snow are still present at Shinkula Pass. Officials said that around five to eight feet of snow is still lying on the road at several stretches. Due to this, movement is currently being allowed only for four-wheel-drive vehicles as a safety measure. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is continuing snow clearance operations to further improve road conditions and ensure safer travel.
Deputy Commissioner Lahaul-Spiti, Kiran Bhadana, said that the situation is being closely monitored by the district administration. She added that if weather conditions remain favourable and snow clearance progresses smoothly, tourist traffic towards Shinkula Pass may be permitted in the coming days.
Meanwhile, hardship continues in other snow-bound areas of the state. In Outer Seraj region, Highway-305 remains blocked due to nearly four feet of accumulated snow. The National Highways Authority has deployed only one JCB machine for snow clearance, which has drawn criticism from locals. Even after the weather cleared, residents of around 69 panchayats in Outer Seraj have not received any relief.
People are being forced to walk nearly five kilometres through snow-covered stretches to meet daily needs. On Saturday alone, about 50 people reportedly crossed the pass on foot from both sides. Local residents Bhage Ram Rana, Budhi Singh Rana, Diwan Singh and Pritam Singh urged the authorities to deploy additional machinery from the Banjar side to speed up snow clearance and restore road connectivity at the earliest.
The administration has assured that efforts are being made to address the situation on priority.
