CPI (M) demands immediate compensation for farmers affected by unseasonal rains and hailstorms

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed grave concern about the unseasonal rains and heavy hailstorms that have caused extensive damage to crops in the state, leading to significant financial losses for farmers and gardeners. In a statement released today, the party demanded that the government immediately assess the damage caused and provide adequate compensation to those affected.
The unseasonal rain and drop in temperature have damaged crops, including apple, pear, mango, stone fruits, off-season vegetables, and wheat, among others. The damage caused by the heavy hailstorms has led to farmers and gardeners incurring losses worth crores of rupees. The party has called on the government to compensate those who have taken crop insurance under the crop insurance scheme immediately.
The party has also demanded that the government immediately stop the recovery of loans taken by farmers and gardeners and provide relief by paying the outstanding amount of about Rs 90 crore for the apples taken under the Mandi Mediation Scheme (MIS).
“The farmers and gardeners are facing a serious crisis due to the natural calamity in the state,” the statement reads. “The government must discharge its responsibility and set up a disaster relief fund for the agriculture and horticulture sector to provide immediate relief to those affected.”
Sanjay Chauhan, the district secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said, “The government must act immediately to provide compensation to farmers and gardeners affected by the unseasonal rains and hailstorms. The agricultural crisis is serious, and farmers cannot get out of it without the help of the government.”
The party has called for the immediate assessment of the losses caused by the natural calamities and the provision of relief from the disaster relief fund. The economy of apple in the state is about 6000 crore rupees, and its contribution to the state’s economy is significant.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has also criticized the government’s decision to end assistance in the field of agriculture and horticulture, forcing farmers and gardeners to buy costly items from the open market. The party has called for the government to take steps to address the agrarian crisis and support farmers and gardeners in the state.
