CPI(M) Shimla Protest Iran Attack
Shimla, March 6,
In a significant show of dissent against shifting geopolitical tides, workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a robust protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shimla on Thursday. Responding to a nationwide call, the demonstrators condemned the recent military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, characterizing the action as a “blatant violation” of international law and a direct assault on Iran’s sovereignty.
The protest comes at a time of heightened anxiety in Himachal Pradesh, as state government estimates suggest that between 42,000 and 43,000 residents are currently employed across West Asia. The escalating conflict has left thousands of families in the hill state worried about the safety of their kin in a region increasingly pushed toward instability.
Violation of UN Charter and Global Peace
Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) State Secretariat member Rakesh Singha, alongside district leaders Amit and Vivek Kashyap, pulled no punches in their critique of “US imperialism.” The leaders argued that the unprovoked military aggression bypasses the United Nations Charter and threatens to dismantle the fragile peace of the Middle East.
“The burden of these strategic maneuvers by powerful nations is never borne by the elites, but by the ordinary citizens and the working class,” the speakers noted. They alleged that the escalation is a calculated move to secure economic interests at the cost of human lives and regional stability.
Impact on Himachal’s Diaspora- CPI(M) Shimla Protest Iran Attack
The party expressed deep concern for the nearly nine million Indian workers in Gulf nations, emphasizing the specific vulnerability of the Himachal diaspora. With tens of thousands of Himachalis contributing to the state’s economy through remittances from countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, the CPI(M) demanded that the Government of India move beyond “strategic silence.”

The demonstration saw a large turnout of the party’s top state brass, including State Secretary Sanjay Chauhan, and committee members Jagat Ram, Vijay Kaushal, and Falma Chauhan, among others. Protesters raised slogans calling for global unity and the protection of democratic rights against external aggression.
While the State Government has recently stated it is monitoring the situation and is in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs, the CPI(M)’s protest highlights a growing local demand for more proactive measures to shield the state’s migratory workforce from the fallout of the West Asian crisis.
