Shimla, Nov 9,
Dense fog has enveloped parts of Himachal Pradesh, prompting the Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a fog alert for the Bhakra Dam reservoir area in Bilaspur and the Balh region in Mandi district. With visibility dropping below 50 meters, authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution as reduced visibility poses significant risks on the roads.
The IMD attributes the persistent fog to a combination of factors, including paddy stubble burning, residual Diwali pollution, and the prolonged dry spell. These elements, coupled with seasonal factors, have contributed to the formation of a thick layer of fog and smog, impacting both air and road transportation.
The adverse weather conditions were evident this morning when a Delhi-bound flight was forced to circle above Jubberhatti Airport for 15 minutes, awaiting improved visibility for landing.
While the IMD predicts clear skies for the next two days, a Western Disturbance (WD) is expected to bring light snowfall to high-altitude areas and light rain to medium-altitude areas by November 11.
The state has experienced a severe rainfall deficit of 98% since the beginning of October, with only 0.7 mm of rain recorded. This prolonged dry spell, coupled with air pollution and stagnant weather conditions, has led to deteriorating air quality, posing health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory ailments.
The upcoming Western Disturbance offers hope for improved air quality and relief from the persistent smog and fog. However, until then, residents and travelers should be prepared for continued visibility challenges in the early morning hours across several districts.
