Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) placed nine places of Himachal Pradesh were sounded for the Avalanche Warning in a Bulletin issued here today the warning, remains valid until March 20, 2025.
DEGRE highlighted the risks of avalanche in several districts, particularly in higher altitude areas of above 2900 meter where heavy snowfall and unstable snow conditions have increased the likelihood of avalanches. The areas fall under the orange warning are o Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur, indicating a high risk of medium-sized avalanches.
Authorities have advised residents in these regions to restrict movements to safer routes through valleys and avoid snow-loaded slopes. Evacuation efforts are underway in unprotected settlements near avalanche-prone areas.
Meanwhile, Kullu is under a yellow alert, where small-sized avalanches are possible, and Shimla remains under a green alert, with generally stable conditions but isolated risks.
In Uttarakhand, Chamoli district is under an orange alert, with similar warnings for high-altitude areas above 3100 meters. Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh are under yellow alerts, where small avalanches are possible, and residents are urged to exercise caution. The state government has activated disaster management protocols, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities on standby for potential rescue operations.
Preparations include setting up temporary shelters, conducting public awareness campaigns, and exploring artificial triggering to stabilize slopes. Emergency services, including hospitals and rescue teams, are on high alert, with helicopters and snow-clearing equipment ready for deployment. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and residents are advised to stay updated with official guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas. The DGRE has emphasized the need for vigilance, as mountain weather conditions can change rapidly, and snow stability can vary significantly over short distances.
According to authorities two villagers were rescued from an avalanche in Mud village, Spiti valley yesterday. The community immediately rallied, and after a tense 10 to 15 minutes, both men were pulled out safely, unharmed and conscious.
