Shimla, June 14
In response to mounting pressure from family members and local villagers, the Director General of Police (DGP) has appointed a Deputy Inspector General (DIG)-rank officer from the state CID to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Head Constable Jasveer Saini. Saini, who was stationed at Kala Amb police station in Sirmaur district, has been missing since June 11.
The appointment of the DIG-level officer follows a picketing protest led by Saini’s relatives and villagers. The police informed the media that the decision was made after a request from Saini’s wife, Anita Kumari, amid escalating concerns over the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
Saini went missing shortly after posting a video on social media on June 10, alleging pressure from his superiors regarding a case. His disappearance has sparked protests and demands for a thorough investigation. On Thursday, Saini’s family and supporters staged a demonstration outside the deputy commissioner’s office in Nahan, urging for a high-level inquiry.
In the video, Saini expressed his distress over the alleged pressure from a senior officer. His disappearance has led to widespread speculation and concern about the internal workings of the police force. His family and supporters have questioned the integrity of the police and called for immediate action to locate him.
The state police emphasized that serious efforts are being made to trace Saini. The DGP’s office released a statement assuring that a DIG-rank officer has been assigned to the inquiry, indicating the gravity with which the police department is treating the case. The statement also mentioned that the inquiry officer is making substantial efforts to uncover the truth and find Saini.
The incident has drawn significant political attention. Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur highlighted the troubling nature of the case, pointing out the alarming circumstances of a police officer going missing. He criticized the police for not addressing Saini’s concerns earlier, forcing him to resort to social media.
The controversy has intensified with accusations from BJP President Rajiv Bindal and the state media spokesman, who blamed the government for the declining law and order situation in the state. This case has once again put the spotlight on the alleged pressures within the police hierarchy and the need for transparent and accountable policing.
As the investigation proceeds, the priority remains finding Head Constable Jasveer Saini and addressing the serious allegations he raised, ensuring justice, and restoring public confidence in the police force.
It is noteworthy that a press release issued by SP Sirmaur denied the allegations of interference by senior police officers in the investigation.
