Shimla, Nov 4,
As the echoes of Diwali celebrations faded, the Himachal Pradesh Fire Department released data highlighting the importance of fire safety during festive periods from October 30 to November 1. While the state experienced a surge in fire calls, the department’s swift response and proactive measures ensured minimal damage and no loss of life.
A total of 81 fire calls were received during the festive season, with the districts of Shimla, Kangra, and Mandi reporting the highest number of incidents.
Shimla district reported the highest number of fire calls, with 20 incidents, and played a pivotal role in saving property valued at ₹5.17 crore. This was followed by Mandi, where six fire calls resulted in the protection of assets worth ₹3.18 crore. Notably, Solan reported five incidents but managed to save a substantial amount of property valued at ₹10.5 crore, reflecting the significant impact of timely fire and rescue operations.
Forest fires accounted for a significant portion of the total fire incidents (30 out of 81). This suggests the need for stricter measures to prevent and control forest fires, especially during dry and windy conditions.
The calls included a range of fire types such as house fires, with Kinnaur reporting two incidents, and other miscellaneous fire-related emergencies. Rescues were fewer, but critical in saving lives and property. Thankfully, no human life was lost, although four individuals sustained injuries due to fire-related incidents. The swift action of fire services likely prevented a greater loss of life and property.
Collectively, the fire and rescue operations led to a remarkable saving of ₹24.99 crore worth of property. The Himachal Pradesh Fire Department attributed the relatively low impact of these fires to a combination of factors: extensive public awareness campaigns, swift response by firefighters, and the department’s investment in modern firefighting equipment and technology.
