Nahan, Dec 23,
Alert policing averted a potential security breach in Haripurdhar market on Tuesday after local police intercepted two vehicles illegally masquerading as police vehicles in the busy market area of Sirmaur district.
Superintendent of Police N.S. Negi said that a police team from Shri Renuka Ji Police Station was conducting checking near Sangdah Chowk at around 6.10 pm when two vehicles—a Bolero (HP28A-8771) and an Innova (HP07E-0791)—approached from the direction of the Shri Renuka Ji Temple, repeatedly blowing horns. Both vehicles were fitted with police insignia and siren systems, arousing suspicion. He stated that both vehicles were found to be using fake police number plates and were unlawfully fitted with red beacons, in clear violation of the law. He said that after enquiry two persons have been detained.
During checking, four persons including the driver were found in the Bolero, while occupants of the Innova included Ajay (34), a resident of Karnal, Haryana, and Uday Sharma of SAS Nagar, Mohali. Ajay was found in possession of a revolver with seven live cartridges and a .315 bore rifle with ammunition. Though he produced an arms license, it was found that the weapons were being carried outside the permitted licensing area, violating licensing conditions.
During the check, police also found that one of the occupants was wearing a police uniform, further escalating concerns of impersonation. Uday Sharma, who was wearing a police uniform with an HPP badge, failed to produce any valid identity card or posting orders and gave contradictory statements, at times claiming to be a Vigilance or CID officer.
Following instructions, SHO Renuka Priyanka reached the spot, and both vehicles were seized and taken to Sangrah Police Station for verification and questioning.
Now, Police have registered a case under relevant sections and launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the motive behind the impersonation, including whether the accused were attempting to exploit the appearance of authority for criminal or other unlawful activities.
Appealing to the public for vigilance, police urged citizens to report any suspicious movement involving misuse of police uniforms, vehicles, or official insignia, warning that strict action will be taken against anyone found impersonating law enforcement personnel.
