
Shimla/Chamba, June 5
A moderate earthquake measuring five on the Richter scale struck Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh late Friday night, sending residents rushing out of their homes in several parts of the region.
According to preliminary information, the earthquake occurred at 10:04:37 pm (IST). The epicentre was located in Chamba district at latitude 32.289 degrees North and longitude 76.434 degrees East, with a shallow depth of 5 kilometres, which intensified the impact of the tremors in nearby areas.
The earthquake was felt across Chamba and adjoining districts, with many residents reporting strong shaking lasting for a few seconds. People in several localities came out of their houses and gathered in open spaces as a precautionary measure. There were also reports of tremors being felt in parts of Kangra and neighbouring regions.
No immediate reports of loss of life, injuries or damage to property were received till the filing of this report. District authorities said the situation was being closely monitored and assessment teams would verify whether any damage had occurred in remote areas.

Chamba district falls in a highly seismic zone and is among the most earthquake-prone regions of Himachal Pradesh. The district has witnessed a series of minor tremors in recent weeks. Experts note that the Himalayan region remains geologically active due to the continuous movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence.
Authorities have advised residents to remain alert and follow safety protocols in the event of aftershocks.
