Kangra, June 11
In a crackdown, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, Himachal Pradesh, has suspended four senior students for engaging in ragging activities. This marks the institution’s first such incident in 15 years, reflecting its firm stance against such misconduct.
The college previously faced national scrutiny in 2009 following the tragic death of Aman Satya Kachroo, a first-year MBBS student who succumbed to injuries inflicted during a ragging incident by four second-year students. This incident led to the Supreme Court’s intervention and the establishment of stringent anti-ragging laws across India.
Fifteen years later, the college is again in the spotlight for similar reasons. Dr. Milap Sharma, Principal of Dr. R.P. Government Medical College, confirmed that a junior student lodged a complaint with the Anti-Ragging Cell, alleging severe mistreatment, including physical assault, harassment, and bullying by his seniors.
Following a thorough investigation by a five-member Anti-Ragging Committee, four students were found guilty. The college has taken decisive action to ensure such activities are not repeated. Two students from the 2019 batch, have been expelled from the college and hostel for one year. Additionally, they have been fined Rs. 1 lakh each, with one suspended from classes and one from his internship for the same period.
Furthermore, two students from the 2021 batch, have been suspended from the college for six months and fined Rs. 50,000 each.
Dr. Sharma emphasized that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging and that any future incidents will be met with strict legal action. The measures taken by the college aim to send a strong message against such behavior, reinforcing the importance of a safe and respectful academic environment.
The college’s swift and stern response serves as a deterrent to potential offenders and a reassurance to students and parents alike regarding the institution’s commitment to student welfare and safety.
