HC rap spurs Shimla administration into action to Ease New Shimla traffic chaos
Shimla, July 11,
After the Himachal Pradesh High Court’s recent concern over traffic disruption and inconvenience caused by optical fibre laying works in New Shimla, the district administration has stepped up efforts to ensure compliance with the court’s directions and restore normalcy in the area.
Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap chaired a high-level meeting of officials on Friday to review the situation and issue directions for the immediate implementation of the High Court’s orders.
The meeting focused on reducing traffic congestion, ensuring public safety and preventing further inconvenience to residents, schoolchildren and office-goers affected by the excavation work undertaken for laying optical fibre cables in New Shimla.
The Deputy Commissioner said the excavated road has been restored to facilitate smooth movement of traffic and minimise inconvenience to commuters. He directed all departments to strictly adhere to the High Court’s directions and ensure that future development works do not disrupt public life.
Emphasising that public convenience and student safety would remain the administration’s top priorities, Kashyap instructed the police department to strengthen traffic management arrangements in the area. The Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department and other executing agencies were asked to work in close coordination to address any remaining bottlenecks without delay.
Considering the heavy traffic load on the New Shimla route, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) was directed to operate smaller buses to improve traffic movement on the narrow stretches. The police department was also instructed to deploy adequate personnel at congestion points to regulate traffic during peak hours.
The Deputy Commissioner said the district administration would ensure timely and effective compliance with all court directions and adopt necessary measures to minimise inconvenience during ongoing and future infrastructure projects.
The meeting was attended by Additional District Magistrate (Law and Order) Pankaj Sharma, DSP Traffic Chandrashekhar, officials of the Shimla Municipal Corporation, Police Department, Public Works Department, Himachal Road Transport Corporation, Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board and representatives of the telecom company executing the optical fibre project.
The High Court had recently taken note of the traffic bottlenecks and public inconvenience caused by the excavation work in New Shimla, prompting the district administration to initiate coordinated measures to improve traffic flow and ensure compliance with the court’s directives.
