Himachal minor theft iPhone: Nadaun teen pledges Mother’s Gold to buy smartphone
Hamirpur/Shimla April 9,
A troubling case from Nadaun in Himachal Pradesh has highlighted the growing pressure of consumerism among teenagers, after a minor boy allegedly stole his mother’s gold jewellery to finance the purchase of a high-end smartphone.
According to police sources, the incident came to light when a woman approached authorities reporting missing gold ornaments from her home. What initially appeared to be a case of theft soon unfolded into a family shock, as suspicion led to the involvement of her own son.
Investigations revealed that the minor, influenced by peer pressure and a desire to own an iPhone—widely perceived as a status symbol among youth—had taken the jewellery and shared the plan with his friend Krish and the latter’s sister. The trio reportedly mortgaged the ornaments with a private finance company to secure a loan, allegedly intended to fund the purchase.
Superintendent of Police Balbir Singh confirmed that acting on the complaint, police traced the pledged jewellery to the finance firm. The ornaments were successfully recovered, providing partial relief to the family.

However, officials indicated that the case goes beyond simple theft. The involvement of multiple minors has raised concerns over decision-making under peer influence and the normalization of risky shortcuts among adolescents.
Police have initiated further legal proceedings against those involved, while also considering counseling measures given the age of the accused. Authorities emphasized that such cases require a balanced approach—addressing both accountability and rehabilitation.
The incident serves as a stark reflection of a larger societal concern: the rising influence of consumer culture on young minds. As aspirations increasingly get tied to material possessions, experts say the need for value-based conversations within families has never been more urgent.
