Shimla, Aug 10,
Himachal Pradesh is currently facing the devastating effects of a relentless monsoon, with severe flooding and widespread disruption reported across the state. An orange alert has been issued for five districts—Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur—due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.
The monsoon’s impact was especially severe on Friday night when Nahan in Sirmaur district experienced a staggering 168.3 mm of rainfall.
This torrential downpour turned streets into rivers, flooding homes, shops, and vital infrastructure. Residents in the affected areas have reported significant damage to their properties, as floodwaters invaded their homes. In Amarpur Mohalla, the situation was particularly dire, with Ward Councilor Madhu Atri noting extensive damage caused by rainwater and debris entering homes, destroying essential belongings.
Transportation across the state has been severely affected, with landslides leading to major disruptions. The Kalka-Shimla four-lane highway has been reduced to one-way traffic between Parwanoo and Dharampur due to landslides. Additionally, National Highway-707 is blocked near Sataun, and the Shimla-Kinnaur NH was closed for 20 hours on Friday. The Chandigarh-Mandi NH also experienced a 13-hour blockade due to an overturned trailer and landslides, leaving travelers stranded overnight.
Agriculture in the region is also suffering. There have been widespread reports of significant damage to crops and fields due to the relentless rains. The situation has been worsened by power outages and disruptions to drinking water supplies, with over 50 roads currently blocked across the state.
The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of continued heavy rainfall and potential flooding in several districts. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, avoid flood-prone areas, and brace for ongoing disruptions as the monsoon continues to lash the region.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are coordinating efforts to address the extensive challenges posed by this severe weather event.
