Shimla, Dec 24,
Himachal Pradesh is gearing up for another snow spell as an active Western Disturbance brings widespread snowfall and rain to the state from December 27 to 29, 2024. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light to moderate snowfall across the high, mid, and adjoining low hills, with the peak activity expected on December 28. Shimla and other popular tourist destinations are likely to experience light snowfall and rain, offering visitors a postcard-perfect winter getaway before new year.
” Under the influence of an active Western Disturbance and other favourable atmospheric conditions, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall & snowfall activity is very likely to commence over many parts of the Himachal Pradesh from the evening/night of 27th December, 2024 and continue till the morning/forenoon of 29th December, 2024, with peak activity occurring on 28th December, 2024,” stated the IMD release.
In the plains and lower hills, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning during the evening and night hours of December 27 and 28.

This spell of wet weather is also set to break the persistent cold wave, bringing much-needed relief from dense fog and ground frost that have impacted the region, they added. The biting chill is expected to ease significantly from December 27, with milder conditions forecast for the next three to four days.
For travelers, this is the perfect opportunity to witness Himachal Pradesh at its winter best, as the landscape transforms into a snowy paradise.
However, caution is advised for those venturing into higher altitudes, where weather-related disruptions may occur. The upcoming snow and rain spell promises not just scenic beauty but also respite from freezing temperatures, making it a double treat for residents and tourists alike.
Noteworthy that on Monday December 23, snowfall was witnessed in the many parts of the State. This surprise spell across Himachal Pradesh significantly brought down maximum temperatures, creating chilly conditions in the region. Most stations reported maximum temperatures 5-7°C below normal, with some locations showing a departure of 2-3°C below normal. The sharp dip in temperatures is attributed to fresh snowfall in higher altitudes and cloudy weather across many parts of the state.
The heaviest snowfall was recorded in Khadrala (24 cm), followed by Sangla (16.5 cm), Chopal and Jubbal (15 cm each), Kalpa 13.7cm, Pooh 6 cm and Shimla (7 cm). These snow-covered regions experienced a marked fall in day temperatures, intensifying the cold conditions. The state capital, Shimla, recorded a maximum temperature of just 1.8°C, 2.7°C below normal
Now, as the hills prepare to don their snowy mantle once again, Himachal Pradesh is set to captivate hearts with its mesmerizing charm. Don’t miss this chance to experience winter magic like never before!
Pertinent to mention that locals as well as visitors should stay updated on weather and road conditions to make the most of this snow-laden spectacle.
