Shimla, Sept 10,
The Himachal Pradesh Education Department has moved ahead with a major school reform plan, setting in motion the process to affiliate 229 government schools with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The initiative follows Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s Independence Day announcement that state-run schools would switch to the CBSE curriculum beginning 2026–27.
In a recent communication to the State Government, the Directorate of School Education explained that the step is designed to create a level playing field for students appearing in national-level competitive examinations such as JEE, NEET, and NDA. The move also aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes skill development and preparing youth for future challenges.
Schools proposed for affiliation include Institutes of Excellence, Atal Adarsh Vidyalayas, PM Shri Schools, Model Schools, and upgraded Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools. Selection has been based on infrastructure, student strength, and location.
According to the Directorate, affiliation will require a registration and inspection fee of about Rs 70,000 per school. It has requested the State Government to earmark funds not only for these charges but also for teacher training and minor infrastructural upgrades needed to comply with CBSE norms.
The roadmap suggests that applications will be scrutinized by November 2025, followed by inspections in January 2026, paving the way for affiliation by February 2026. Post-affiliation, CBSE will also take charge of continuous professional development programmes for teachers.
Officials further revealed that the State intends to seek relaxation from CBSE and the Union Education Ministry regarding norms and fees, citing Himachal’s geographical difficulties and financial constraints.
Education authorities believe the reform could revive interest in government schools, improve classroom standards, and strengthen the competitive edge of Himachali students across the country.
