Himachal to roll out FASTag-based entry tax at Six key Toll barriers

A move claimed to streamline entry tax payment and enhance convenience for commuters, the Himachal Pradesh government is set to introduce FASTag-based entry tax collection at six key toll barriers in the state. The new system aims to reduce waiting times and improve revenue collection efficiency.

According to a State government spokesperson, the FASTag facility will be implemented at a total of 55 toll barriers in phases, with the first phase covering six locations: Garamora and Parwanoo (Main) in Bilaspur district, Tipra Bypass (Parwanoo) in Solan district, Govindghat in Sirmaur district, Kandwal in Kangra district, Mehatpur in Una district, and Baddi in Solan district.

The government has decided to auction-cum-tender all entry tax barriers for the financial year 2025-26, with an expected revenue increase of 7.5% compared to 2024-25. Successful bidders of the selected toll units will be required to implement the FASTag-based system within 45 days.

 Failure to comply will result in lease cancellation. The lessees will bear all associated costs, including those for installation, operation, and charges payable to banks and digital transaction facilitators such as NPCI, IHMCL, and the acquiring bank.

Senior officials have been instructed to oversee the timely implementation of the system. Additionally, toll lessees must submit documentation confirming FASTag compliance at their own expense and issue receipts to commuters within 24 hours. Charging any amount beyond the approved toll rates will be strictly prohibited.

Currently, all Himachal Pradesh-registered vehicles, except for heavy commercial vehicles, are exempt from entry tax. The FASTag system will be programmed to ensure that deductions are not made for exempted vehicles.
