Shimla, Nov 19,
A biting cold wave has gripped the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, transforming serene lakes and water bodies into icy landscapes. Keylong, Kaza, and Tabo, nestled in the Spiti Valley, shivered through their coldest nights of the season, with temperatures plummeting to -9.4°C. The freezing conditions have even extended to lower altitudes, with glacial lakes and fountains in Chamba, Kangra, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur beginning to ice over.
While the mountains are experiencing extreme cold, the plains are shrouded in a different kind of discomfort. Dense fog has enveloped Bilaspur and Sundernagar, reducing visibility and disrupting daily life. A yellow alert has been issued for these regions, warning of foggy mornings and evenings until November 21.
Despite the chilly nights and foggy mornings, the state is experiencing pleasant daytime temperatures. However, the prolonged dry spell has farmers worried. The delay in rain and snowfall is hindering the sowing of Rabi crops, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the agricultural season.
Relief, however, is on the horizon. The Meteorological Department forecasts light rain and snowfall in isolated areas of Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu districts between November 22-24. More widespread precipitation is expected in the middle and higher reaches from November 23-25. Temperatures are predicted to drop by 2-3°C over the next three days, stabilizing thereafter.
As Himachal Pradesh braces for the impending weather changes, the state’s diverse topography continues to showcase its unique climatic variations. From the freezing heights to the foggy plains, the state offers a fascinating interplay of weather patterns.
