Himachal Pradesh experienced a significantly wetter March compared to usual this year. Data released by the Meteorological Centre Shimla reveals that the state received a substantial 24% more rainfall than the average amount for the month.
The average rainfall for Himachal Pradesh in March is 113.4 mm. However, in 2024, the state saw a significant increase, recording a total of 140.5 mm. Though noteworthy that this increase was not uniform across all districts. Sirmaur emerged as the champion rain recipient, boasting a remarkable 120% above-average rainfall. On the other hand, Chamba witnessed a slight deviation from the norm, receiving 3% less rain than usual.
The rainfall breakdown of Bilaspur: 87 pc more rainfall, Kullu 68 pc, Mandi 77 pc, Una 71 pc,Hamirpur: 47 pc, Shimla 37 pc, Lahaul Spiti 15 pc, Kangra: 10 pc, Solan two pc and Kinnaur one pc more rainfall.
On the other hand, March 2023 saw a stark contrast. The state had received a disappointing 42 pc less rainfall than the average, with a total of only 66.3 mm recorded. Additionally, several districts, including Chamba, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti, experienced below-average precipitation. meanwhile for April, the IMD said that apart from sunny skies there are chance of April-showers. While residents of Himachal Pradesh may have enjoyed pleasant weather recently, the forecast for the first few days of April suggests a change. Sunny skies are expected on Tuesday, April 2nd. However, a yellow alert has been issued for rain and snowfall in the middle and higher altitude districts of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba on April 3rd and 4th.
Meanwhile, the plains, encompassing Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kangra, can expect clear skies until April 4th. The weather is predicted to take another turn by April 5th and 6th, with the possibility of rain and snowfall spreading across the entire state. This change is attributed to the activation of a western disturbance, which could also bring a decrease in temperatures. From April 7th onwards, sunny weather is expected to return across Himachal Pradesh.
