HP Chief Minister, Deputy CM, and media fraternity condoles demise of DP Uniyal

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, and members of the media fraternity, including senior journalists P.C. Lohumi, K.S. Tomar, and former Director of Public Relation Department B.D. Sharma, expressed their condolences upon the demise of DP Uniyal.
Uniyal, who served as the founder and editor of a weekly publication for the last five decades, dedicated his career to the profession of small newspapers and advocated for crucial issues affecting farmers. P.C. Lohumi stated that Uniyal played a vital role in raising awareness about farmers’ concerns.
BD Sharma reflected on the memories of the past, recalling that DP Uniyal, along with Ram Rattan Paul, Kameshwar Pandit, and Bishambhar Lal Sud, were highly respected editors of weeklies published from Shimla. These journalists were known for their unwavering commitment to the profession, integrity, outspokenness, and their ability to connect with the public.
Sharma, who worked closely with five chief ministers as a seasonal PR professional, mentioned that during that time, communication modes in Himachal Pradesh were limited due to the challenging hilly terrain, and the reach of mainstream media was restricted. However, small newspapers like Uniyal’s played a crucial role in disseminating information to remote areas. Uniyal maintained a strong rapport with the Information and Public Relations Department, engaging in discussions on matters of government and public interest.
The passing of D.P. Uniyal is a significant loss for the journalistic and PR fraternity, according to Sharma. He expressed his condolences to Uniyal’s sons, Ajay and Arun, who are also journalists, and other family members, wishing them strength during this difficult time.
P.C. Lohumi shared his personal sorrow, stating that the news of Uniyal’s departure to the heavenly abode was profoundly saddening, shocking, and unexpected. He remembered Uniyal as a dedicated and committed person who tirelessly advocated for the development of the hills and possessed practical knowledge of the issues faced by hill people and possible solutions.
Uniyal’s weekly publication, Himalaya Times, focused on hill development, horticulture, and the potential of the hills. It had been published regularly for almost six decades.
Uniyal was not only a journalist but also a progressive horticulturist with apple orchards in Chopal. He actively engaged in multiple endeavors, including social activism to guide hill people on modern farming techniques. Whenever national leaders visited Shimla, Uniyal tirelessly advocated for higher financial assistance and projects for Himachal Pradesh.
Lohumi concluded by saying that Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have lost a staunch advocate who always stood up for their causes. He expressed his gratitude and mentioned the treasure trove of memories and shared moments he had with Uniyal, promising to remember him fondly.
