Shimla, Oct 28,
In a development in the mysterious death case of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) Chief Engineer Vimal Negi, the Himachal Pradesh High Court on Monday reserved its order on the bail application of accused Police ASI Pankaj Sharma.
The single-judge bench of Justice Virender Singh concluded the hearing after listening to extensive arguments from both the defense and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case. The CBI had previously submitted its status report on the matter to the court.
Arguing for the agency, the CBI counsel strongly opposed the grant of bail to Sharma. On the other hand, the senior advocate representing the petitioner argued that his client had cooperated fully with the investigation agency and had disclosed all facts during questioning. The defense contended that there was no longer any justification for keeping Sharma in judicial custody.

The bail plea before the High Court is an appeal challenging the order of the Special CBI Court in Shimla, which had earlier rejected Sharma’s bail application and remanded him to judicial custody.
ASI Pankaj Sharma holds the distinction of being the first person arrested by the CBI in this high-profile case. The agency has registered the case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant sections, pertaining to the offense of causing the disappearance of evidence.
The court’s decision, which is now awaited, will be a crucial milestone in the case, determining the immediate fate of the sole individual currently in custody in connection with the death of Vimal Negi.
