An HPSEB worker succumbed to severe burns sustained from an electric shock while working alone on a transformer in Lohara-Tikri village, under the Sangrah sub-division on 3rd February. Reportedly the absence of a junior engineer or any other employee during the incident compounded the tragedy. Local villagers, Bhagwan Singh and Ramesh Kumar, who were nearby at the time, recounted how the 55-year-old electrical worker, Jeevan Singh, fell into a ditch approximately 100 feet below after being electrocuted at the transformer.
They rushed him to the hospital PGI, where he tragically passed away. DSP Sangrah, Mukesh Dadwal, confirmed that a police team from Sangrah had promptly reached Chandigarh on Friday for the post-mortem of Jeevan Singh. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
It’s concerning that in the past decade, five electrical workers have lost their lives due to electric shocks in the Sangrah sub-division of Sirmaur district. The incidents include the deaths of Tula Ram in Rajana on July 13, 2019, Amar Singh in Kakog on July 30, 2013, Ratan Kumar near the old tehsil office Sangrah on December 26, 2021, and Brijesh in Mandoli on July 10, 2022. Both these were working under the contractor of the Electricity Board. According to departmental sources, the line from the Sangrah sub-station to Tikri village was closed in the absence of both junior engineers, while Jeevan Singh had to work on the Lohara-Tikri transformer.
Locals stated that the closure of the Executive Engineer’s office of the Electricity board in Sangrah has led to increased incidents of unannounced power cuts and negligence in the area.
