The Himachal Pradesh government has granted remission to 433 convicted prisoners ahead of Independence Day, with three prisoners set to be released solely on account of the sentence reduction, a government spokesperson said on Friday.

Of the 1,025 convicted prisoners lodged in various jails across the state, 433 prisoners with good conduct were found eligible for remission under the applicable rules.

Prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment or more than 10 years will receive three months’ remission, while those sentenced to five to 10 years will get two months. Those serving three to five years will receive 45 days, one to three years 30 days, and six months to one year 15 days’ remission.

The remission will not apply to detenues and prisoners convicted of serious offences under the NDPS, POCSO, Prevention of Corruption and UAPA laws. Those convicted of terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, habitual offenders and prisoners who have jumped parole are also excluded from the benefit.

The remission has been granted on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day.
