Dharamshala, April 27,
A swift and well-coordinated response by the district administration led to the successful rescue of two paragliders after a mishap in the remote Guran Dhar area of Baijnath subdivision in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.
Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa said that authorities acted immediately upon receiving information about the accident. Given the treacherous terrain and absence of motorable access to the site, an aerial evacuation was deemed essential.
An Indian Air Force helicopter was promptly requisitioned, enabling rescuers to reach the otherwise inaccessible location without delay.
One of the victims, Arun Singh, a paraglider pilot from Rajasthan, sustained serious injuries in the incident. The second individual, Ranjan Gupta, was left stranded after getting stuck on a tree in the hilly terrain. The difficult topography, marked by steep slopes and dense vegetation, posed significant challenges to ground rescue teams, making conventional evacuation nearly impossible within a reasonable timeframe.

A special rescue operation involving coordinated efforts between local administration, police personnel, and the Air Force was launched. The helicopter crew executed a precise extraction, ensuring both individuals were safely evacuated from the site.
Following the rescue, both injured paragliders were transported to Vivekananda Hospital in Palampur for medical treatment. Officials confirmed that they are currently under medical care.
Bairwa noted that the success of the operation underscored the importance of rapid response and inter-agency coordination in handling emergencies in mountainous regions.
He also reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring safety measures for adventure sports activities in the district.
