Shimla, Dec 3,
A fresh advisory issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, has signalled a challenging week ahead for farmers and orchardists across Himachal Pradesh, with the state headed into an extended dry spell coupled with a sharp decline in minimum temperatures. The latest Agromet Bulletin underscores that the absence of rainfall since November 29 and persistent clear skies are setting the stage for intensified cold, elevating the risk of frost across mid and higher hill regions.
According to IMD’s extended range forecast for December 5–11, the weather pattern is expected to remain largely unchanged, with most parts of the state witnessing dry conditions and a marked fall in night temperatures. Higher hill areas may see minimum temperatures dipping between minus 8°C and 2°C, while mid-hill regions could record 4°C to 8°C. Even lower hills and plains are unlikely to be spared, with temperatures projected between 2°C and 10°C. Meteorologists caution that several pockets in Lahaul–Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu, Kangra and Mandi may experience temperatures well below normal for this time of the year, significantly escalating the probability of ground frost formation.
The prolonged dryness is also expected to take a toll on soil moisture levels. The bulletin highlights that increased evaporation and lack of precipitation could adversely impact wheat, garlic, onion and various winter vegetables that are currently in the sowing or early growth stages. Orchard belts—especially the apple-growing zones—have been urged to stay vigilant as newly pruned stems and exposed tissues are particularly vulnerable to early frost and cold injuries under these conditions.
To minimise crop stress, the IMD has recommended a combination of moisture conservation and frost mitigation practices. Farmers have been advised to retain soil moisture through mulching, avoid over-irrigation that may lead to run-off, and instead opt for light irrigation during evening hours to reduce the risk of frost settling on crops. Apple growers, still recovering from the recent surge in canker infections reported across the state, have been guided to apply copper oxychloride after harvest and maintain rigorous orchard sanitation, including the removal of fallen leaves and diseased fruits.
Cold stress is also a concern for the livestock sector. The advisory urges cattle owners to keep sheds dry and properly insulated, ensure adequate ventilation, and protect young and weak animals with jute coverings during night hours. Regular de-worming and ensuring access to clean drinking water have also been recommended to maintain herd health during the harsh spell ahead.
With cold wave-like conditions expected to further intensify, the IMD has appealed to farmers to monitor district-wise agromet advisories through the Meghdoot app and stay alert to sudden dips in temperature that could trigger frost formation. The coming week, experts emphasise, will require careful field management and close observation as Himachal Pradesh prepares for one of the season’s most challenging phases
