Shimla, Dec 5,
The President of the International Council of Jurists, Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, has written to U.S. President Joe Biden urging him to retract remarks made in his pardon letter for his son, Hunter Biden, in which he suggested that “raw politics” had entered the U.S. justice system.
In a media note shared with Himachalscape Dr. Aggarwala expressed concern that such a statement could undermine the integrity and authority of the judicial system.
In his letter, Dr. Aggarwala acknowledged the U.S. President’s constitutional power to grant pardons, emphasizing that this right extends to all individuals, including Hunter Biden. However, he criticized President Biden’s remark, pointing out that it lacked substantiation and could damage the reputation of the judiciary by implying political interference without any evidence.
“An incumbent President must be cautious in making statements that could diminish the dignity of the courts and the justice system,” Dr. Aggarwala wrote. He added that the suggestion of “raw politics” affecting the justice system had not been debated or substantiated by any public discourse.
Dr. Aggarwala further stressed the importance of maintaining the independence of the judiciary, reminding President Biden that while political issues may evolve, the justice system is vital for preserving public trust. He urged the President to withdraw the remark in order to protect the global reputation and dignity of justice systems around the world.
The letter concluded with a respectful request for the President to retract the comments, with Dr. Aggarwala emphasizing the critical need to preserve the integrity of the justice system for the benefit of all.
