Shimla, Nov 25,
Kinnaur is set to enter a new chapter in tourism and connectivity, with a successful trial run of the Heli-Taxi service conducted in Reckong Peo on Monday. For a district long constrained by fragile terrain, unpredictable weather, and limited transport links, the development marks a significant breakthrough — one that could reshape winter tourism in Himachal Pradesh.
With snowfall becoming scarce in Shimla and other lower regions, Kinnaur’s naturally snowy winters and dramatic landscapes position it as a strong contender for emerging as the state’s next big winter tourism hub. The lack of reliable winter access, however, has historically kept visitors away. The helicopter service now promises to bridge that gap.
Kinnaur’s rugged valleys, towering massifs, and vibrant cultural heritage have always held immense appeal, but its challenging road network has kept the region largely landlocked. Landslides, recurring blockages along the Sutlej gorge, and heavy winter snow have frequently cut off the district, restricting travel mainly to the summer and monsoon months.
The new helicopter link is expected to transform this reality. A journey from Shimla to Reckong Peo — typically an exhausting eight-hour road trip — can now be covered in just 30 to 40 minutes. Officials say the aerial route will not only provide residents with quicker and safer mobility but will also ensure tourist footfall round the year.
Tourism stakeholders believe the service has the potential to be a game-changer for destinations like Sangla, Kalpa, Chitkul, Nako, and Ropa Valley, which often remain inaccessible during harsh winters. Improved connectivity is likely to strengthen hotel and homestay businesses, encourage adventure tourism, and boost local artisan and craft markets.
The district administration is also examining possibilities of regular sorties under the Tribal Sub-Plan to ensure continuous operations. Discussions are underway on integrating the service with emergency response systems, including heli-ambulance facilities, to further enhance its utility.
With the successful trial marking a strong start, Kinnaur may finally be on the brink of unlocking the winter tourism potential it has long possessed — but could never fully access.
