Lahaul-Spiti administration issues snow and avalanche advisory for tourists and commuters
Shimla, April 20
The administration of Lahaul-Spiti has issued an advisory warning tourists and commuters to travel cautiously on the snowbound Manali-Keylong-Leh National Highway in the district. Due to continuous heavy snowfall on both sides of Atal Tunnel Rohtang and the slippery condition of the national highway, a travel advisory was issued this morning. The advisory mentions the prevailing inclement weather in the valley and the possibility of avalanches. Locals and tourists are advised to be very cautious while traveling in the valley.
Keeping the ongoing inclement weather conditions in mind, the administration has appealed that no tourist vehicles are allowed to enter through ATR in the district until the weather improves. In case of snowfall, tourists are also requested to move and stay in safe places. All hotel and homestay owners are also requested to advise their guests accordingly. In case of any emergency and for more information on weather or road status of the valley and in the event of any natural calamity or incident, people can contact the District Disaster Control Room. This advisory has been issued in public interest by the Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul and Spiti.

In the high reaches of Manali, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti districts, there was moderate to heavy snowfall which may trigger avalanches. Hansa in Lahaul-Spiti recorded 20 cm of snow, Kukumseri 12 cm, Gondla 10 cm, Keylong 7.2 cm, and Kalpa 0.4 cm. In the past 24 hours, thunderstorms disrupted normal life in Shimla district, Kangra, Bhuntar (Kullu), Sundernagar, Mandi, Bilaspur, and Palampur.
The Delhi-Shimla air flight could not be operated for the last two days due to inclement weather conditions. Including the state capital, power supply also remained erratic in the last 24 hours. There are reports of hailstorms in some places in Shimla and Bilaspur districts.
Kalpa (Kinnaur) recorded 46.6 mm of rain, Joginder-nagar 45 mm, Reckong-Peo 45 mm, Sangla 43.4 mm, Chamba and Dalhousie 36 mm, tourist resorts Narkanda and Bhuntar airport 29.8 mm, Shimla 28.7 mm, Solan 26 mm, Bharmaur (Chamba) and Kufri 21 mm, and Jubbarhati airport recorded 19 mm of rainfall. Many other places were also lashed by rain and thunderstorms in the past 24 hours.
The minimum temperature of Keylong was minus 0.3 degrees, Kalpa was 0.4 degrees, Narkanda was 3.6 degrees, Kufri, Dalhousie, and Manali were at six degrees, Shimla was at 9.6 degrees, Bhuntar was at 10.6 degrees, Dharamshala was at 14.2 degrees, Una was at 16.4 degrees, Nahan was at 15.2 degrees, Solan was at 11.5 degrees, Kangra was at 15.7 degrees, Mandi was at 13.2 degrees, Bilaspur was at 17 degrees, Hamirpur was at 15.7 degrees, and Chamba was at 13.8 degrees.
The meteorological office has forecasted rain or snowfall in many places in the next 24 hours, as the yellow alert is still continuing in the state.
