Mandi, Nov 20,
The woman severely injured in the acid attack reported from Sain Mohalla, Mandi, has died during treatment at PGI Chandigarh. Doctors declared 38-year-old Mamta dead late Sunday night. Her body will be brought to Mandi after the post-mortem for the last rites.
According to Superintendent of Police, Mandi, Abhimanyu Verma, the victim had been shifted from AIIMS Bilaspur to PGI Chandigarh after her condition deteriorated. “Despite sustained medical intervention, the victim succumbed to her injuries late last night,” the SP stated. “With her death, the case will now proceed under appropriate sections related to murder. The investigation is being carried out on priority to ensure strict action.”
The incident occurred on November 15 when Mamta’s husband, Nand Lal, allegedly threw acid on her during a domestic confrontation and subsequently pushed her from the second-floor window of their house. She suffered extensive acid burns and severe injuries from the fall. Neighbours immediately took her to Mandi Zonal Hospital, from where she was first referred to AIIMS Bilaspur and later to PGI Chandigarh.
During the course of the investigation, police found that the accused had purchased the acid nearly three years ago, claiming it was meant for cleaning utensils at his tea stall. Nand Lal was arrested shortly after the incident, and a local court granted three-day police remand to facilitate further inquiry.
Family members and neighbours revealed that Mamta had been subjected to domestic violence for a prolonged period. She was reportedly prevented from meeting her relatives and was under constant suspicion from her husband. Just days before the attack, Mamta had posted a video on social media making serious allegations against him.
Mamta is survived by a son and a daughter. Police said further evidence is being collected, and all necessary legal steps will follow.
