Nahan, May 13,
Chaos erupted on National Highway-707 at Sataun in Paonta Sahib subdivision on Tuesday evening after a speeding dumper allegedly ran over a pedestrian, killing him on the spot and triggering massive public outrage.
The deceased was identified as Indra Singh, son of Sher Singh, a resident of village Majhauli under Kodga post office.
According to eyewitnesses, Indra Singh was crossing the road near the Sataun bus stand to purchase goods from a nearby shop when a speeding dumper coming from the opposite direction hit him violently.
He fell onto the road and was crushed under the heavy vehicle, leading to his instant death.
The accident sparked panic and anger in the area. Eyewitnesses alleged that the dumper driver fled from the spot immediately after the mishap along with the vehicle.
Soon after the incident, enraged villagers and relatives of the deceased assembled at the accident site and blocked NH-707 in protest.
The highway blockade resulted in long queues of vehicles on both sides, severely disrupting traffic movement and creating a tense atmosphere in the region.
Protesters raised slogans against the administration and demanded immediate arrest of the accused driver along with strict regulation of speeding heavy vehicles operating in the area.
Villagers alleged that despite initial assurances from police officials regarding seizure of the vehicle, contradictory information later emerged, further intensifying public anger.
As the situation deteriorated, officials from Puruwala police station along with the DSP reached the spot and attempted to pacify the agitating crowd.
Police have launched a search operation to trace the absconding dumper driver and seize the vehicle involved in the accident.
Local residents said accidents involving speeding dumpers and trailers have become frequent on the highway and demanded stringent action to prevent further tragedies.
