Shimla, Dec 12,
In the past 24 hours, higher regions of Himachal Pradesh witnessed light snowfall, while the rest of the state remained predominantly dry. Despite the snowfall, temperatures in several hill stations showed an upward trend.
According to the Meteorological Department, Gondla experienced a light spell of snowfall overnight, attributed to a weak Western Disturbance. Parts of Lahaul-Spiti also received mild to light snow. However, the mercury in most areas rose by a few degrees compared to the previous day.
Shimla, the state capital, recorded a minimum temperature of 5°C, an increase of 1.4°C from the previous day. Similarly, Manali, which often experiences subzero temperatures, reported a minimum of 4°C, reflecting a rise of 2.4°C. Other hill stations such as Solan, Bhuntar, and Kalpa registered temperatures of 0.8°C, 1°C, and -1.8°C, respectively, showing slight improvements in nighttime temperatures. Keylong and Kaza also noted marginal increases in their minimum temperatures.
In contrast, several locations in the plains of Himachal Pradesh experienced near-freezing temperatures. Una recorded 0°C, Hamirpur 1.2°C, Bilaspur 2.3°C, Mandi 2.4°C, Kangra 4.3°C, and Dharamshala 3.4°C.
Superintendent of Police Lahaul-Spiti, Mayank Chaudhary, stated that the district administration is closely monitoring weather conditions. On Tuesday, he personally inspected roads and potentially hazardous areas affected by snowfall. The inspection was conducted alongside DySP Raj Kumar and SI Jawal Singh of Keylong Police Station to address challenges faced by police personnel on duty. Measures were implemented to ensure road safety, and restrictions on vehicle movement in snow-covered regions remain in place.
Although the recent precipitation offered some relief from a prolonged three-month dry spell, it was insufficient to make a significant impact. Nevertheless, the rainfall and snowfall have helped settle dust and alleviate fog, providing respite from the dry and chilly weather.
The Meteorological Department predicts mainly dry conditions across the state, with the possibility of light rain or snow in isolated areas of Lahaul-Spiti.
