Continuous heavy rainfall since Sunday night has once again disrupted normal life in Himachal Pradesh, with the Shimla-Jubberhatti Airport Road blocked after a recently constructed breast wall collapsed around 9 am on Monday. Long queues of stranded vehicles were seen on this crucial route, while adverse weather and poor visibility also affected flight operations at Shimla Airport.
Water supply in Shimla town has been temporarily suspended due to high turbidity levels in water sources. Sahil Sharma, spokesperson of Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited, said that pumping from the Nauti Khad water source at Gumma was stopped as turbidity reached 6,850 NTU in raw water at 8:30 am.
“Residents are advised to use water judiciously and maintain buffer storage, as the rising silt levels may hamper lifting operations,” he added. Adding, that” Giri pumping has been stopped due to heavy flood.”
Meanwhile, heavy rains have claimed two lives in Chadi Panchayat of Chamba district. A newly married couple, Sunny and Pallu, died after a massive boulder rolled down a hillside and crushed their house in Sutanh village.
Pallu had recently returned to her maternal home, and her husband had arrived on Sunday to take her back. Their house was completely destroyed in the incident.
Authorities have announced the closure of schools in six sub-divisions of four districts due to landslides and road blockages. The affected areas include Theog and Kumarsain in Shimla district, Thunag and Karsog in Mandi district, Ani in Kullu district, and Shillai in Sirmaur district.
The state is witnessing continuous downpours, causing frequent landslides and disruption to transportation and essential services. Officials have urged people to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety advisories.
