Nalagarh/Shimla, Jan 3,
Panic spread across Nalagarh town and nearby villages after a powerful explosion was reported inside the premises of Nalagarh Police Station on Thursday morning, prompting an immediate security response and sealing of the entire area.
According to police officials, the blast occurred at around 9:40 a.m. behind the police station’s store room, close to the investigation officers’ room. The impact shattered window panes of the store room and caused damage to surrounding structures, including the IO room, an army canteen, the Market Committee building, a nearby private establishment and several adjoining houses. No injuries or loss of life were reported.
Superintendent of Police, Baddi district, Vinod Dhiman said police received information about the incident at around 9:45 a.m., following which senior officers and multiple teams rushed to the spot. “Initial assessment confirms a powerful explosion. However, there has been no casualty. The exact cause will be determined only after a detailed forensic examination,” he said.
A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory, Junga was called to the site and has collected samples for scientific analysis. Separate police teams have been constituted to examine CCTV footage installed within and around the police station premises.
A formal case has been registered at Nalagarh police station under Sections 324(4) and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with relevant provisions of the Explosive Substances Act. Police officials stated that all possible angles are being investigated and the situation is under continuous monitoring.
Amid speculation circulating on social media regarding a possible terror link, authorities clarified that no conclusion has been reached so far. Officials said coordination has been established with the Punjab Police, and a team from the National Investigation Agency has carried out a preliminary reconnaissance as part of standard operating procedures.
Police also dismissed unverified social media claims linking the blast to the banned Babbar Khalsa outfit, terming such reports as speculative and misleading.
Separately, officials clarified that a routine airport security rehearsal conducted earlier this week at Shimla Airport, involving emergency response drills with firecrackers and sniffer dog squads, was a pre-scheduled exercise and has no connection with the Nalagarh explosion.
Eyewitnesses said the sound of the blast was heard up to 400–500 metres, triggering fear among residents in the surrounding area. Police have appealed to the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading rumours, assuring that verified information will be shared as the investigation progresses.
