Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 150 billion units milestone achieved, SJVN celebrates historic power generation mark
Shimla, March 9,
The SJVN Limited has achieved a major milestone as its flagship Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) crossed 150 billion units (BU) of cumulative power generation, reinforcing its role as one of India’s most significant clean energy projects and a crucial contributor to the northern power grid.
The landmark achievement was celebrated at the powerhouse in the presence of SJVN Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta and Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma, along with senior officials of the company.
Congratulating the team, CMD Bhupender Gupta said that since its commissioning in May 2004, the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station has demonstrated exceptional operational reliability and has emerged as a cornerstone of the northern grid by delivering dependable green energy and helping maintain grid stability during periods of peak demand.
Highlighting the plant’s operational achievements, he said the project recorded its highest-ever annual generation of 7,610.257 million units in the financial year 2011–12. More recently, the station achieved a record monthly generation of 1,222.170 million units in July 2024, while the highest-ever daily generation of 39.572 million units was recorded on August 13, 2024, reflecting its ability to efficiently harness favourable hydrological conditions.
Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma lauded the dedication of both present and past employees associated with the project. He said the Nathpa Jhakri project has not only strengthened India’s clean energy capacity but has also played a transformative role in the surrounding region by contributing to economic development, employment generation, and improved infrastructure in the local area.

Meanwhile, Head of Project Rajeev Kapoor expressed gratitude to the SJVN management, the Ministry of Power, and the Government of Himachal Pradesh for their continuous support. He also acknowledged the contribution of employees, contractors, contract workers, and the local population in achieving the historic milestone.
Officials noted that the 150 billion units generation milestone carries significant environmental value, as hydropower replaces large volumes of fossil-fuel-based electricity generation, thereby helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Operated by SJVN, the Nathpa Jhakri project continues to benefit from modernization initiatives, digital monitoring systems, and rigorous maintenance practices. Beyond power generation, the project has also contributed to regional socio-economic development through infrastructure creation and livelihood opportunities.
As India continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, the achievement underscores the strategic importance of hydropower in ensuring reliable, clean, and sustainable electricity for the country.
