Shimla, Oct 25
During a routine inspection conducted by the State Food Commission, Himachal Pradesh, serious lapses were detected in the quality of food being distributed to children at several Anganwadi Centres in Kupvi Sub-Division of Shimla district.
According to an official press release issued by the Commission, 10 Anganwadi Centres under the Dhar Chandna Circle were found locked during inspection. The concerned Anganwadi workers were called to open the centres for examination. Upon checking the nutritional supplies, officials found that rice meant for distribution to children was infested with rice weevil larvae and moth worms.
Taking a stern view of this negligence, Dr. S. P. Katyal, Chairman of the State Food Commission, immediately ordered the suspension of the distribution of the contaminated food items and directed that strict action be initiated against the responsible personnel.
The centres inspected included Gaonkhar, Dhar-I, Dhar-II, Sharad, Bethadi, Dak, Bavat, Oran, Mushadi, and Majhgaon, all falling under the Kupvi Sub-Division.
Following the inspection, the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), Chopal, has been instructed to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and to take immediate and appropriate action as per established norms.
Officials stated that the Commission has taken the matter seriously, as the contaminated food posed a potential health risk to children. The Commission emphasized that such lapses in maintaining food quality and hygiene at Anganwadi Centres would not be tolerated and that accountability would be fixed at all levels.
The inquiry report is expected to be submitted soon, following which departmental action will be initiated against the erring staff.
