Shimla, April 4- “Shimla MC wards reduced to 34 by Himachal Pradesh Assembly
The Himachal Pradesh Assembly has passed a bill to reduce the number of wards in the Shimla Municipal Corporation from 41 to 34.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri presented the bill for discussion and ascent of the house. He stated that the state election commission had already announced the election for Shimla MC on May 2, 2023, and the government had to reduce the number of wards to address the petitions filed in court.

The bill was introduced on Monday and passed with a voice vote in the absence of opposition members who lodged a walkout from the house earlier.
The previous BJP regime had increased the number of wards from 34 to 41, but the current government argued that reducing the number of wards to 34 would be ideal, with each neighbourhood having a population of about 4987.
The Deputy CM added that reducing the population per ward would result in unnecessary administrative involvement and financial burden.
The Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2023 to reduce the number of wards within Shimla Municipal Corporation is part of the government’s effort to streamline the functioning of municipal corporations in the state.
There are five municipal corporations in Himachal, including Shimla (1.69lakh and 34 wards)), Solan (47,418 and 17 wards), Dharamshala (53,543 and 17 wards), Palampur (40,385 and 15 wards), and Mandi (41,375 and 15 wards).
The state government’s decision to reduce the number of wards in the Shimla Municipal Corporation has drawn mixed reactions. Some people believe that reducing the number of wards would lead to more efficient and effective administration, while others are concerned that the reduction could lead to a lack of representation and increase the workload of existing councillors.
However, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the functioning of the Shimla Municipal Corporation and the other municipal corporations in the state.
