Shimla Police detain fringe activists, Pre-empt escalation in Ram Temple Hall controversy
Shimla, April 11,
To maintain public order, Shimla police on Saturday detained and placed several members of a local fringe outfit called Hindu Sangharsh Samiti under preventive restrictions ahead of a planned protest linked to the ongoing controversy over a wedding reception at the Shri Ram Temple community hall.
The action came hours before the group’s proposed mobilisation at the temple premises, where tensions had been simmering over a reception associated with a nikah ceremony scheduled separately at the Boilueganj Mosque. Police sources indicated that the restrictions, including house arrest of key leaders such as Vijay Sharma, were imposed based on intelligence inputs suggesting the possibility of disruption in a communally sensitive area.
The dispute, which initially arose over the booking of the temple’s community hall for a vegetarian reception, has in recent days been amplified by fringe right-wing elements. Despite repeated clarifications by the temple management that the booking adhered to established norms and that similar facilities have historically been used for social functions across communities, certain groups sought to project the issue in a polarised manner.

Officials maintained that Saturday’s preventive action was necessary to avoid any untoward incident and to ensure that law and order remained intact. Security was visibly enhanced around the temple complex, with police deployment increased in adjoining areas. No incident of violence was reported.
Significantly, the episode reflects a broader pattern observed in Shimla over the past few years, where fringe elements have repeatedly attempted to inflame communal sentiments by exaggerating minor disputes. These actions have, on multiple occasions, posed challenges to the city’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony.
Even local functionaries of the Bhartiya Janata Party have reportedly distanced themselves from such fringe groups, indicating discomfort with attempts to disturb social cohesion for political or ideological mobilisation.
The administration has reiterated its zero-tolerance approach towards vigilantism and any attempts to disturb peace, underlining that communal harmony and rule of law will not be compromised under any circumstances.
