Shimla, Nov 6,
Shimla Police has been recognised as Himachal Pradesh’s best-performing district in tracing and recovering lost or stolen mobile phones, marking a significant achievement in technology-based policing.
According to data shared by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) through its Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), Shimla Police successfully traced 770 mobile phones out of 1,262 blocking requests received between January 1 and November 5, 2025. Of these, 212 devices were physically recovered, recording a recovery rate of 27.5 percent — the highest in the state.
Within the district, Jhakhari Police Station led with a 59.5 percent recovery rate, followed by Kupvi (54.5%), Chirgaon (50.8%), and New Shimla (50%). The Sadar Police Station registered the maximum number of blocking requests at 257. The Cyber Cell played a crucial role in tracking lost devices through advanced digital tools and data analysis.
Superintendent of Police, Shimla, Sanjeev Gandhi, attributed the success to consistent technological upskilling and data-driven investigations. “Mobile phones today are identity-linked devices integrated with financial and KYC platforms. Their recovery demands technical precision and patience. Our focus remains on enhancing cyber capability to ensure better outcomes,” Gandhi said.
Officials informed that several of the recovered devices were traced not only within Himachal Pradesh but also from neighbouring states such as Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Some were linked to cases involving cyber fraud, extortion, and online exploitation, underscoring the broader role of digital investigation in maintaining public safety.
Acknowledging this achievement, the Department of Telecommunications (Himachal Pradesh LSA) honoured Shimla Police during the Annual North Zone Conference on Telecom Security, held at Hotel Meghdoot, HPTDC Kiarighat, Solan, on Thursday. The event brought together telecom operators, law enforcement officials, and financial institutions to discuss security challenges and digital fraud prevention strategies.
Deputy Director General (Telecom) Sandeep Arya commended Shimla Police for its effective use of CEIR and inter-agency coordination, terming it a model for other districts.
The recognition highlights the growing importance of technology-led policing and interdepartmental collaboration in curbing digital and property crimes across the state.
