Shimla Viral Video dog carrying human leg: Probe ordered into Biomedical waste lapse
Shimla, Feb 25,
A shocking lapse in biomedical waste handling has come to light in Shimla after a viral video showed a stray dog carrying a human leg outside Chamyana Hospital, prompting authorities to initiate an inquiry into the incident.
According to the statement, the case dates back to February 19, 2026, when a 61-year-old patient, Atar Singh, a resident of Mandi district, underwent a surgical procedure at Chamyana Hospital that involved amputation of his leg. Following the operation, the severed limb was sealed in a medical disposal bag and kept in a designated storage area within the hospital premises.
The hospital administration stated that permission had already been granted to an authorized agency for the disposal and handling of human remains. However, no representative from the agency arrived to collect the limb. Meanwhile, the storage area continued to be used for keeping other medical materials as well.
The situation escalated on the night of February 22, when hospital staff reportedly removed trolleys from the storage room but inadvertently failed to lock the door properly. While the door was shut, it was not secured with a lock, and officials believe it may have opened due to wind pressure during the night.
Taking advantage of the unsecured room, a stray dog is suspected to have entered the storage area and carried away the bag containing the amputated limb. The following day, on February 23, an empty bag was found near the storage facility, raising alarm among hospital staff.
The matter came to public attention on February 24, when locals spotted a dog carrying what appeared to be a human leg towards the hospital’s main gate. The incident was recorded and widely circulated on social media, leading to public outrage and serious questions over hospital waste management protocols.
Hospital authorities have acknowledged the lapse and confirmed that the Medical Superintendent (MS) of Chamyana Hospital has initiated a formal investigation into the incident. Further action is expected based on the findings of the inquiry.
The incident has raised serious concerns about biomedical waste handling and safety protocols at healthcare facilities, especially in sensitive cases involving human remains.
